Femtosecond laser machining allows highly efficient ablation with minimized micro-cracks, heat affected zone, and shock waves in the materials. This makes femtosecond laser machining attractive in many applications. In this talk, use of femtosecond laser machining for fiber optic sensor development is presented. Direct fabrication of gratings within an optical fiber is possible, leading to development of innovative optical fiber based sensors. Fabrication of in-fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and long period grating (LPGs) is accomplished. Using LPGs, sensing of carbon dioxide in a medium is presented. Fabrication capabilities for components with complicated geometries at the micro-scale (tubes, disks, notches, cones, etc) are also presented.

Introductin of speaker:
Dr. Martin Jun is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada. He received the BSc. and MSc. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He then received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering. He worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Illinois for two years and he joined the University of Victoria as an Assistant Professor in 2007. He also holds designation as a Professional Engineer in B.C., Canada.
Dr. Jun is an emerging researcher in the field of multiscale advanced manufacturing and micro- and nano-manufacturing. He has extensive experience in the development of micro-scale manufacturing processes and systems as well as micro-scale fabrication and measurement technologies. His current research topics include micro-machining, femtosecond laser material processing, fabrication of optical fiber-based sensors, measurement tools and probing systems for micro-scale parts, nanoparticle coating, and electrospinning processes for tissue engineering scaffold fabrication. He is the recipient of the 2011 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award and 2012 Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers I.W. Smith Award for Outstanding Achievements.
